Two seminal recordings in jazz history,
Kind of Blue (Miles Davis) and
A Love Supreme (John Coltrane), will
be central studies in the course. Visits by
recording artists, engineers and authors
are planned. This is not a course in recording
technology, but rather a course studying
the importance of these technologies to
jazz musicians and their careers.
Related to this, we will study other
media influence on the business,
including radio, TV, video and the
internet. The course is taught by
Associate Professor of Music, Skip
Wilkins, who is a jazz pianist, composer
and recording and touring artist. www.skipwilkinsjazz.com
lCourse Description: In this course, we will examine jazz
music, musicians, and careers. The
central reference point will be jazz
recordings and how they have defined
and shaped the business. We will look
at who was recorded as well as where,
when and how they were recorded,
including how the developing
technology changed the music. We will
examine who benefited from the
recordings and who did not.
