Center for Canal History and Technology

Walking down what 200 years ago was Abbot Street near the eastern end of the Park, one will soon find the Center for Canal History and Technology (CCHT), or "Abbott Street Works."  In the 18th and 19th Century a thriving industrial complex of mills, furnaces, and smiths stood on this spot.  Shortly, a new museum complex designed at giving the feeling of the original Industrial complex at Abbott Street will be erected.  As architects would say, the building depicts the “architectural vernacular” of the American Industrial Revolution.  The new Center's core of exhibits are found within a small group of linked buildings located beside the Lehigh Canal and the Canal Boat Ride.

Even before entering the center one will begin the get a sense of the era's transportation.  On a short length of track will stand an “0-4-0” saddle-tank locomotive.  The clang of the blacksmith will bring you to his shop on the towpath side of the museum.  Not far from the blacksmith's shop one encounters a 26-ton steam engine which once produced electricity.

Once inside, one will see exhibits organized around major artifacts from the area's industrial and transportation history.  In addition to artifacts, the Center for Canal History and Technology will National Canal Museum's Archives.

Anticipated exhibits include: the Blacksmith Shop, the Easton Power Company, the Glendon Iron Works, and The Beuhler Furniture Factory.  Each exhibit will engage visitors through hands-on experiences with exhibits from our industrial past.

The Hugh Moore Park and Museums is seeking funds to complete the Center for Canal History and Technology (CCHT) through the "Campaign to Secure the Future."  Those wishing to contribute may contact Steven Humphrey. Click here to read our annual report.
