"Triangles, Arches and Beams: Explore Engineering with Discover E (Engineering)""Discover E" is designed with children in mind. The exhibit encourages children to explore engineering through hands-on components. The main feature is a basic computer-aided program that allows visitors to design their own simulated bridges. Visitors can use various Brio blocks, giant tinker toys and other materials in the play areas to bring their stimulation to life. They also learn about the water cycle and can observe a groundwater flow simulation and operate a groundwater pump. "Discover E" was created and is circulated by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, Portland, Oregon. Live demonstrations of steam and hot-air engines, children's videos and drawing activities supplement a selection of regional historical artifacts from the National Canal Museum's collections. Antique pumps, hangers from the Roebling aqueduct, canal models, and a bridge model built by Louis J.G. Buehler will be on display. The exhibit gallery will also show a series of black and white photographs by Dr. Joseph E.B. Elliot, Professor of Art & Photography at Muhlenberg College. Dr. Elliot's photographs highlight a variety of bridge designs found across the country. Major support for "Discover E" comes from First Union National Bank. Educational program support is provided by the Lehigh Valley Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers and McTish, Kunkel & Associates. The exhibit is colorful and attracts both children and adults in an interactive learning process. "Triangles, Arches and Beams: Explore Engineering with Discover E (Engineering)" runs through May 6, 2001.
