A Diamond in the Rough

For those of you who have never been to The Quadrant before, I highly recommend that you check it out. Located on North 3rd St. in downtown Easton, it is just a short trip from campus, and even a walkable distance when the weather cooperates! Now in my fourth year here at Lafayette, I can safely say that The Quadrant was one of the best discoveries that I have made in what Easton has to offer.

A small local business, The Quadrant serves multiple purposes. It is both coffeehouse and used book shop, quaint cafe and a venue for live music. As an avid book lover, I enjoy wandering around the three stories of the space browsing through the 50,000 titles that can be found there. But The Quadrant offers more to entice customers inside than shelves chock full of rare or unusual books - it is also an excellent place to get a meal!

Though I have been no stranger to The Quadrant over the years, it was this year specifically that my two best friends and I began a weekly tradition of Saturday brunch at the cafe. Each weekend we would make the short journey downtown, walk inside and seat ourselves in the cozy cafe area at a beautiful tiled mosaic table, and order something delicious to eat. I've tried many different dishes during our time there, but I definitely have a few specific favorites. If I'm in the mood for breakfast, I usually order a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on an everything bagel. If I'm especially hungry, I'll go for the Denver Omelette, which is an egg omelette filled with ham, cheese, peppers and onions. This is an especially hearty meal because it is served with two slices of delicious whole-grain toast, and pieces of fresh fruit - usually cantelope or strawberries. On certain days, owner Jo has specials available ranging from asparagus, mushroom and goat cheese omelettes, to cream-cheese filled crepes served with hot apples. On days when I want lunch, I always stick with Jo's original creation, The Quadrant Book Club. This is a delicious sandwich served on toasted whole-grain bread, filled with spinach, tomatoe, avacado, roasted turkey and dressed with just the right amount of French dressing. The last time I had this sandwich (last weekend), it was served with fresh blackberries, ripened to perfection. The Quadrant also brews a variety of coffees, and also serves many different specialty drinks, like a Black and White Cappucino.

One of the best things about The Quadrant, aside from the food, is the atmosphere. The cafe is usually bustling with all sorts of people. Some are reading the morning paper, some are working on a laptop, some have come with their families. And instead of a kitchen hidden out of sight, Jo prepares all of the dishes behind a counter located in the same general area as the dining tables. It is fun to watch her work and you always know that your food is prepared fresh and made-to-order!

No matter what you're looking for, this is a dining experience you don't want to miss! And if you're a book lover as well, that's just an added bonus!

I absolutely love Quadrant. It was introduced to me by a good friend here at Lafayette and I rave about it to all I know. I'm glad you enjoy it too!

the quadrant is easily one of the best things about easton and as a faculty member and resident of easton i am always thrilled when students wander off campus and find jo and andy at the quadrant. it's truly the nexus of easton. if there's something or someone you need to know, chances are jo can put you in the right direction. of course, this says nothing about the great books and wonderful coffee and food and interesting characters that wander in and out all day.
