Description of the Costa Rican Pavilion from the Expo '86 Official Souvenir Guide:
From the volcanoes and coffee farms of Costa Rica's highlands to the steamy jungles and banana plantations
of its coast, the diverse landscape of this Central American country is the basis for its pavilion
exhibitions and displays.
The pavilion is cleverly designed as a three-dimensional postcard. Its visitors walk through a postcard
scene of palm trees, sun, sand, and blue water, and into a lush green tropical forest. The "flip side" of the
pavilion is a message to the visitors, complete with an enormous stamp!
Costa Rica - the "Rich Coast" - exports coffee, bananas, sugar and cocoa and is developing its natural resources
with the construction of a hydroelectric plant. Nearly a century after construction workers laboured to build the
Northern Railway through treacherous mountain passes and jungle swamps, the train is still the only link for many
communities to the outside world.
Work is also underway on geothermal projects, petroleum exploration and the development of an alcohol fuel
produced from sugar cane and bananas.
