Lafayette College's Society of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (SEES) is a multidisciplinary research club with a mission to develop innovative, sustainable environmental technologies, and, more importantly, to prepare students to be leaders in environmental technologies and research. SEES focuses on integrating the fields of green chemistry, green engineering and sustainability to address current environmental issues.
recent newsComposting Project in Full SwingThe
composting project is a joint effort between SEES and LEAP (Lafayette
Environmental Awareness and Protection). The project was started by Mickey Adelman '10
in the fall of 2007. Adelman was helped by a large
body of student volunteers. The primary goal of the project was to
develop a
composting system that could operate effectively at Lafayette College.
Everyday, food and yard waste are generated on
campus, and sent to landfills. By composting the food scraps from the
dining halls and the yard waste produced on the campus grounds, the
amount of
material being sent to landfills is significantly reduced, thereby
helping with
the college's overall sustainability goals. Compost also provides an
alternative to artificial fertilizers for the campus flower beds. The
students
began by testing various composting systems, including a simple wooden
bin
system and a compost tumbler, which is a steel drum placed on a wooden
stand
with casters so it can be turned easily. After deciding that the
compost
tumbler was the most effective means for composting at Lafayette, and
after
receiving a larger site at which to work, the students expanded by
building
four additional tumblers.
SEES Advisor Developing Researched Based Study Abroad Program Professor Art Kney from SEES,
along with
several other faculty members, is developing a research-based study
abroad
program to New Zealand. Students will spend
a period of five weeks doing field research, and will then spend a
semester at Auckland University.
