MISSION STATEMENT

SEES will provide students with a comprehensive experience in solving current environmental problems from a well-rounded, engineering-oriented perspective. SEES will facilitate the individual research efforts of students, offer opportunities for collaborative interdisciplinary research, foster professional development and provide a forum for discussing issues associated with green chemistry, green engineering and sustainability.

HISTORY

2002 Civil/Environmental Engineering major May Chui and Prof. Arthur D. Kney begin bringing together a group of students to compete in an environmental engineering contest.
2003 Chui and six other students evaluate technologies for arsenic treatment and compete in the WERC contest at NMSU. The group was advised by Professors Arthur D. Kney, Sharon Jones (both Civil/Environmental Engineering) and Chip Nataro (Chemistry).

A group of students decide to take on a new project for the WERC contest, addressing perchlorate treatment in drinking water.

2004 Due to time constraints, this group does not compete in the WERC contest, but does present their research at NCUR.

SEES officially forms as a student club in Spring 2004 to provide a stronger organizational structure for students interested in green chemistry and green engineering.

SEES members begin work on an arsenic treatment project for the WERC contest.

2005 The SEES team places 2nd at the WERC contest for their design of a system to remove arsenic from drinking water in the southwest United States.

A SEES group places 1st in the Pennsylvania AWWA 'Fresh Ideas' contest and are invited to present at the national meeting of the AWWA.

SEES and SEES advisors receive a P3 grant from the EPA to further develop the arsenic treatment technology.
