Housing Regulations

Alcohol use: Students who are twenty-one (21) years of age or older are permitted to posses and consume alcohol in the privacy of their residence hall rooms/suites. In keeping with the College's harm reduction philosophy, kegs and other common containers are prohibited. Alcohol is never permitted in residence hall lounges or other common areas. Students may not furnish alcohol to underage individuals. Lafayette College supports all laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Students who violate these laws are also subject to citation by campus or Easton police officers.

Antennas: Students are not permitted to use outside antennas or dishes to aid TV or stereo reception.

Appliances: No appliance containing open heating elements, with the exception of a “hot pot” with thermostat control, may be used in student rooms. Hot plates, heaters, toaster ovens, etc., pose distinct fire hazards and overload existing electrical circuits; therefore, they are prohibited. Small refrigerators (no larger than 4.0 cu/ft) are permitted.

Bicycles: Bicycles must be stored in individual student rooms or on the outdoor bike racks provided at various locations around campus. Bikes may not be left in hallways, stairwells, lounges or other public areas due to safety concerns.

Cleanliness: Residents are responsible for cleaning their own rooms/suites and restoring common areas (kitchens, lounges) to order after use. Custodial staff regularly cleans common bathrooms and provides basic upkeep for kitchens, lounges, and hallways.

Damages to room: Each student is responsible for any damages that occur to his or her room during his or her occupancy of that room. If damages are accidental, the student must pay repair costs. If damages are the result of vandalism, the individual must not only pay for repairs but may also face disciplinary action.

Damages to communal property: When hallways, bathrooms, lounges, telephones, and other public facilities in a residence hall receive undue abuse, the residents of that area are expected to assist in identifying the responsible individual(s). When the responsible individual(s) cannot be identified, all residents may be required to pay a prorated share of repairing such damages.

Fire Safety : All residence halls are equiped with fire detection and supression systems. To maintain the safety of all occupants and their belongings, students may not tamper with this equipment. Residents must evacuate the residence halls each time the fire alarm sounds and move to a location away from the building. After the alarm is silenced, permission to re-enter the building will be given by fire department or Public Safety officials. In addition, all hallways, stairwells, and entryways must be kept clear to permit safe egress.

Fireworks, firearms, and explosives: Due to concerns for fire safety and personal safety, both the possession and use of any item that might be classified under these headings are strictly forbidden in Lafayette College housing. Violations of this policy could result in suspension from the College.

Guests: Guests may be entertained in residences under the provisions specified in the Lafayette College Code of Conduct. Students are allowed to have guests for short periods of time. Overnight guests are not permitted in College housing without advance permission from all students in the room/suite in which they reside. The host student is responsible for the conduct of his/her guests, including damages caused by them.

Musical instruments: Musical instruments may not be played in residence halls. Practice rooms are available upon request at the Williams Center for the Arts.

Pets: The only pets allowed in Lafayette College residence halls are fish. No snakes, turtles, gerbils, hamsters, birds, rabbits, cats, dogs, etc., will be allowed in the residence halls.

Quiet Hours: In order for students to have enough time to sleep and study, universal residence hall quiet hours are in effect from 10 pm to 8 am on weekdays and 12 midnight to 10am on weekends. Courtesy hours are in effect at all times.

Stereos: Stereos, radios, televisions, etc. are permitted provided they are operated with the proper regard for quiet hours and do not disturb other residents. Sound-reproducing equipment must not be placed in or near an open window.
