Panhellenic Recruitment

The Sorority Formal Recruitment process at Lafayette College occurs at the start of each Fall semester.  Female students with a minimum GPA of 2.40 are allowed to participate in either Formal Recruitment starting in the first semester of their sophomore year.  To register for sorority recruitment, click here.

The term “Formal Recruitment” refers to the traditional method for matching young women to a sorority that is right for them.  During this time, each potential new member will have the opportunity to visit each of Lafayette’s six chapter houses, as well as meeting members of each house, in order to find out which house she considers to be the best fit for her. Below is some FAQs regarding sorority recruitment.

  1. What should I wear when I participate in Formal Recruitment this fall?
The attire for recruitment will be discussed at the Recruitment Orientation, which occurs prior to the start of Recruitment. Typically, attire is "casual," except for Preference Night, where a nice dress is appropriate. Potential New Members (PNMs) will receive t-shirts to be worn for the first night of Recruitment.

  2. What is a Rho Gamma?
A Rho Gamma is a ‘Recruitment Counselor’.  Each group of Potential New Members is assigned two or three Rho Gammas that work to make PNMs feel more comfortable throughout the recruitment process.  Rho Gammas are the women PNMs should go to for any questions about the recruitment process, or sorority life in general. Rho Gammas lead the group from house to house, answer any questions a PNM may have, and help solve any problems that should arise throughout the process of Recruitment.

  3. I really like “Sorority X” and I am friends with a lot of girls in that house.  How can I make sure to end up in this sorority?
One key element of the Formal Recruitment process is keeping an open mind.  It is very important to keep in mind that each house has many great attributes; on the first night of Recruitment, you will have a chance to meet members of each of the six sororities.  It is recommended that you make your decision as you go through the process and explore all of your options (it’s more fun that way, too!). PNMs who enter and complete the process with an open mind are more likely to be selected at the end of the process; they are also more likely to make the right choice for themselves, too.

  4. What happens after Formal Recruitment is over?
Once you join one of the six chapters, your three-week new member period starts.  During this time you will be able to get to know both new and current members better, and learn all there is to know about your sorority leading up to the initiation ceremony, after which you will be an official member of the sorority.
