Alpha Phi History
"The purpose of this chapter is the promotion of growth in character, of unity of feeling, of sisterly affection, and of social communion among its members. And we who are thus united are under a solemn new member to lend a helping hand to one another."
The Alpha Phi International Fraternity was founded in 1872 by ten devoted sisters searching for friendship and striving for leadership, scholarship, and service. Their endeavors began at Syracuse University and have continued to over 200 colleges throughout the United States. Although different, each chapter strives for the same common ideals manifested in the members’ personal growth and development as well as the chapter’s donations to The Foundation. In 1989, a sorority unrecognized by the National Panhellenic Conference, searching for a more secure home, was installed at Lafayette College as the Eta Sigma chapter of Alpha Phi Fraternity, and those that have joined since are grateful for the efforts of the original members.
