2009 SUMMER HOUSINGSummer housing is offered as an extension of academic year housing. All conditions of the Code of Student Conduct and the academic year Housing Contract apply to students living in residence over the summer. Summer housing residents are responsible for adhering to the policies and procedures described in these publications and the specific summer housing terms and conditions published by the Office of Residence Life. The 2008-09 Student Handbook and specific summer housing information is on the Lafayette College web page. SUMMER HOUSING REGISTRATIONPriority consideration for summer housing assignments will be given to those who register by Wednesday, April 29th. After that date, requests will be accomodated in the order they are received. To register for summer housing, click here. Students have the option of requesting a building and roommate(s) on the housing registration form; however, specific requests cannot be guaranteed. The majority of summer rooms are double occupancy or within 4-person apartments; thus, summer housing registrants are encouraged to identify a potential roommate. Students who preference Rubin or Watson Courts are more likely to be assigned to those buildings if their arrival dates are June 7th or later. Room assignments will be sent by May 15th. Details about key sign out, move-in, and other procedures will be included in the assignment letter. Students who register to move into summer housing when the session opens on Sunday, May 24 have permission to remain in their spring semester residence hall rooms until that date (i.e. through senior week and graduation). SUMMER BUILDINGSFor the 2009 Summer Housing session, Lafayette College students will be housed in Conway, PT Farinon, Kamine, Rubin, and Watson Courts. Watson Courts is comprised of 4-person apartments that contain a mixture of double and single rooms. Rubin contains single and double rooms. Conway, PT Farinon, and Kamine contain only double rooms. Kamine and Rubin are equipped with central air conditioning. The Plant Operations staff will install window units in Conway, PT Farinon, and Watson Courts (bedrooms only). Summer residents are not permitted to install personal air conditioning units. Each Watson Court apartment contains a kitchen. There is one common area kitchen in Conway and PT Farinon. Rubin has a large common kitchen and one kitchenette. Kamine has a kitchenette on each floor. Personal size refrigerators may be kept in student rooms. Due to fire safety regulations, cooking in individual student bedrooms is not allowed and appliances such as toaster ovens, hotplates, and microwaves (except those in combination fridge/microwave units manufactured by MicroFridge – see below) are prohibited. SUMMER MOVE INConway, PT Farinon, and Kamine Halls will be available for summer occupancy beginning at 3pm on Sunday, May 24th. Students moving directly into their summer assignments from their spring semester rooms must complete their transition by 6pm on Monday, May 25th . Rubin and Watson Courts will be available for summer occupancy beginning on Sunday, June 7th. Summer students assigned to Rubin or Watson Courts will be temporarily assigned to Easton or Marquis from Sunday, May 24th through Sunday, June 7th. Students moving directly into temporary summer assignments from their spring semester rooms must complete their transition by 6pm on Monday, May 25th . TEMPORARY HOUSINGThe summer housing session is set in accordance with the academic calendar; the first day of summer classes is the Monday following commencement. Summer rooms in Rubin and Watson Courts (buildings that house only upper-level students during the regular school year) will not be ready for immediate occupancy due to the need to clean and perform maintenance upon the departure of spring occupants. Due to their size and availability during the first few weeks of the summer, Easton and Marquis will be used for temporary housing for Rubin and Watson Courts summer students. Easton and Marquis are not air-conditioned. Each building contains one central kitchen and mostly double rooms. To avoid residency in temporary housing and the need to move twice, summer students who have an arrival date prior to Sunday, June 7th may request housing in Conway, PT Farinon, or Kamine when completing the on-line summer housing registration. Students who preference Rubin or Watson Courts are more likely to be accomodated if their arrival dates are June 7th or later. SUMMER HOUSING CLOSING AND MOVE OUTSummer housing closes at 5pm on Friday, August 14, 2009. To facilitate the transition out of summer assignment, summer students registered for housing through the end of the session (Friday, August 14th) may move into their fall residence hall assignments beginning Wednesday, August 12th. When summer housing closes at 5pm on Friday, August 14th, summer students may not remain on campus unless they have received permission from the Office of Residence Life. An additional fee for housing may apply for any individual stay in housing between the close of summer housing and the date the residence halls re-open for the fall semester. Summer students who do not have a residence hall assignment for the fall semester (i.e studying abroad, fraternity house, private off-campus) must make their own arrangements for housing beyond the summer housing closing date. Students departing prior to Wednesday, August 12th may not leave items in their summer rooms or move them into their fall assignments. The College has a small number of storage facilities and access is limited. College storage is available only as space allows and arrangements to use it must be made in advance. The College does not provide storage space for furniture, carpets, lofts, or hazardous items. As needed, students are encouraged to contact one of the several self-storage locations in the Easton area. Further information about College storage facilities and procedures are posted on the Residence Life webpage. When a student vacates summer housing the room must be completely empty, clean, and suitable for occupancy by another student. Based on their room condition inspections, the Department of Plant Operations will assess damage and/or cleaning charges accordingly. Residents of Watson Courts are responsible for cleaning all areas, including the kitchen and bathroom. New keys will be cut for any keys that are not returned within 48 hours of the official end of the summer housing session (or the student’s registered departure date, should it be earlier). Charges for lock changes will be incurred by the individual student. Similarly, charges will be assessed for visiting students who are issued checkpoint tags but do not return them within 48 hours of the end of summer housing. SUMMER HOUSING FEES AND BILLINGSummer housing rates are set for weekly stays (Sunday - Saturday). Housing charges will not be adjusted to reflect stays that fall between the established weekly rates. The summer housing fees for each week (or portion of the week) are as follows:
Housing charges are determined by the arrival and departure dates each student lists on his/her Summer Housing Registration. All summer students must vacate housing no later than the departure date for which they have registered. Occupancy of summer housing is defined as possession of a room key and/or occupancy of a residence hall space by self and/or belongings. Therefore, students should expect to incur additional housing charges for any period beyond their registered departure dates that they and/or their belongings remain in their summer rooms and/or their keys are not returned. Housing payments are due to the Controller's office in advance of occupancy. Requests for refunds/credits based on a change to departure dates that occur after the student’s first day of occupancy must be made in writing prior to his/her departure from summer housing. Students are individually billed for summer housing unless the Office of Residence Life receives written approval from a sponsoring department that the fees are being covered by that department’s account. Housing fees paid by the Excel research program, the Career Services internship program, or other sponsored departmental programs may only be applied to the summer housing term (May 24th – August 14th). Any additional housing charges for extended stays in housing will be assessed to the individual student. CABLE TV AND MICROFRIDGEAfter receiving their housing assignment, summer residents may contract for cable TV from STC services. Summer students may rent microfridge units for the summer months by contacting Campus Specialties at www.campusspec.com or 1 800 525-7307. DINING AND PARKINGDuring the summer session there is no formal meal plan and fewer on-campus dining options. Dining Services schedules the food service operations and will publicize facility hours. For questions about summer dining options/operations, please contact Dining Services. Any summer student who will have a car that is not currently registered on campus should contact Public Safety for a free temporary permit. During the summer, residents may park in any student lot. Parking restrictions related to faculty/staff designations and other specified locations (red zones, restricted spaces, etc) remain in effect and tickets for violations will be billed to student accounts.
