This Week's Discussion:
Swine Flu and "Failed States": The US and Mexico
6 p.m. Wednesday, May 6th
event led by Peter Moody
Mexico has been in the news a lot lately, most recently with the "swine flu" outbreak.
But earlier in the year there was a large splash about drug violence and the labeling of Mexico
as a potential "failed state," with implications for US troops at the Mexican border. And there is
always the issue of immigration. With all these added up, it may be that Mexico, and not Iraq, Afghanistan,
or Iraq, will be the major foreign policy crisis of the Obama administration.
Wednesday's discussion will try to take a look at these issues that have put Mexico in the news, and how the
US is responding to them. Is the Obama administration doing a good job in confronting these issues, or is there
some way that they could do better?
