Intramural Sports Program"One of the most popular programs on campus!"
Students participate in a wide variety of sports. A separate handbook, including entry deadlines and competition details, is published each year for captains and chairpersons. The aim of the intramural sports program is to provide each individual with the opportunity to participate in his/her favorite type of competition, and to explore and enjoy new or untried sport activities. Each year, we add several new events as a means to attract new people to the program. There is an opportunity for every individual to participate no matter what the level of ability. You are encouraged to sample several of the activities so as to discover the ones that you enjoy and may continue to pursue later in life. The Intramural Sports Program emphasizes and rewards values such as sportsmanship, and broad participation and leadership. There is something for everyone!
How to EnterTeam Sports (with Captain's Meeting)Any group may register a team by completing the "Team Sport Entry Form" by the entry deadline and bringing it in person to the scheduled captain's meeting. Event rules will be discussed and distributed at the captain's meeting. If the captain cannot attend, another team representative should attend on his or her behalf. Team schedules will be distributed by e-mail and campus mail no later than 48 hours prior to the event start date. Individual /
Dual Sports & Team Sports (without Captain's Meeting) Entry forms are available in Farinon (next to the ATM machine), at the Kirby Sports Center Reception Desk and at the Recreation Services Office. In order to minimize scheduling conflicts, please refer to the Intramural Sports Schedule for event and league days of competition and game start times. When registering for an event, please note that the entry forms has a designated area for noting the times your team can not play. Don't have a full team? Try our new Free Agency List! Sign up about one week in advance of the deadline. We will add your name(s) to our list and then attempt to form a team. Call the Office of Recreation Services at 330-5772 for more information. Intramural Chairpersons’ MeetingsAugust 31st at 4:30 p.m.January 28th at 4:30 p.m. Meetings are held in room 221 Farinon. Intramural Sports HistoryTwenty male and female intramural directors from 11 historically black colleges formed the National Intramural Association (NIA) at the first intramural conference held at Dillard University in New Orleans in 1950. Two years later, white intramural directors were invited to attend the Third Annual Conference at Howard University. Within the next few years the participation of women in NIA was voluntarily abated. With the passage of a constitutional revision in 1971 the acceptance of women as members of NIA was once again possible. In 1975, the organization was renamed National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association. Lafayette, which has been an institutional member for 19 years, is one of 705 colleges and universities currently affiliated with NIRSA. |
