Jeff Shiff worked with Prof. Robert Allan on research that examined pigeons' ability to detect the connection between their response to a stimulus and a delay in feeding time. Each time they pecked the stimulus button, the clock was set back by one second. Eventually they stopped responding to the stimulus, whereas other birds whose pecking had no effect on the clock continued to respond at relatively high rates. Shiff, a B.S. psychology major, was captain of the tennis team and a member of Sigma Xi, honorary science fraternity.

In Fall 2002, the Psychology Department moved into its new building, Oechsle Hall.  A generous gift provided for the complete renovation of Alumni Gym to create this state-of-the-art facility, which houses the Psychology Department and the Neuroscience Program. The building includes laboratory space designed for both human and animal research, a large auditorium, smaller classrooms, multimedia seminar rooms, teaching labs and several networked areas used for labs in human cognition, observational methods, and social phenomena.
