William P. Rutledge was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania.  After graduation from West Pittston High School he entered Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he majored in metallurgical engineering.  Upon graduation from Lafayette, Mr. Rutledge joined Bethlehem Steel Corporation in the “Loop” training program.  He worked at the Sparrows Point Plan for five years.  During this period he earned a Master of Science Degree in Financial Management from George Washington University.

For the next three years Mr. Rutledge worked for STAMCO Sales Company in the capital equipment business.  In 1971 he joined FMC Corporation in Chicago and was transferred to the Food Machinery Division in San Jose, California in 1974.  He entered FMC’s Defense Group in 1977, later becoming Manager for the Bradley Fighting Vehicle Program, and finally, General Manager of Defense Systems’ International Division.  He attended the Stanford Executive Program in 1984.

Mr. Rutledge joined Teledyne, Inc., in 1986 as a Group Executive, was elected Vice President in 1987, Senior Vice President in 1988, Executive Vice President in 1989, President in 1990, and as President, he was also elected Chief Executive Officer in 1991.  In 1993 he was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors, while retaining his position as Chief Executive Officer.

On August 15, 1996, when Allegheny Ludlum Corporation and Teledyne merged to form Allegheny Teledyne, Inc., Mr. Rutledge was named President and Chief Executive Officer of this new company.  For family and personal reasons, Mr. Rutledge resigned from Allegheny Teledyne on March 6, 1997.

On June 11, 1999, Mr. Rutledge was appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer at Communications & Power Industries, Inc., in Palo Alto, California.  In December of 1999, Mr. Rutledge became Chairman of the Board, leaving the position of Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Rutledge resigned as Chairman of the Board upon sale of the company in February, 2004.

Mr. Rutledge is a member of the Board of Directors of Sempra Energy in San Diego, California; First Federal Bank in Santa Monica, California, Communications & Power Industries, Inc., in Palo Alto, California and AECOM, Inc. in Los Angeles, California; and he also serves on the Boards of Trustees of Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, and St. John’s Hospital and Health Center Foundation in Santa Monica, California.

Mr. Rutledge and his wife, Trudy, live in Pacific Palisades, California.  They have three children.
