ExxonMobil forecasts that global energy demand will be 60% higher in 2030 than it was in 2000. The increase reflects growing population, increased prosperity, and improved energy efficiency. The vast majority of the increase will occur in developing countries.
The scale of the world’s energy demand is enormous. Alternative energy sources — biofuels, wind, and solar power — will contribute to meeting this enormous demand, but even with rapid growth, alternatives will represent only a small fraction of the total energy portfolio in 2030.
Ensuring access to energy for people has been and will remain a great challenge. Effective solutions to this challenge will help turn desire for progress into a reality for millions of people around the world. |
