Leopard Spotlight - Dana DeFillipps '00
The most important detail of this spring’s season for Lafayette Softball’s Jana DeFillipps '00 was the split win against Lehigh.
The possibility to take Lehigh out of first place in the Patriot League Tournament marked an accomplishment for DeFillipps and the team. DeFillipps, a junior history major and the third baseman on the field said, “We kept the scores low. [Lehigh] didn’t expect Lafayette to do so well.”
As a freshman and sophomore, Jana started in the outfield, but moved to the infield, preferred by her because she is, “always in the play.”
DeFillipps interjects, however, that wherever Coach Stacey Cagenello would place her on the field, infield or outfield, she would “love that position.” Her commitment to the sport continues as she spends all of her spare time practicing with the hopes of team improvement.
She feels that the Lafayette team has the potential to beat every team in the league in at least one game.
DeFillipps maintains a strong interaction with the team and Coach Cagnello. Even though DeFillipps had foot surgery last summer and was unable to practice, she stayed close to the team by keeping the books for the fall games. This type of association exemplifies the good camaraderie among the players and Coach Cagnello.
Wearing the same clean sweatpants to every game merely helps DeFillipps hold her head up high when she goes out to play for the team which she enjoys so much.
DeFillipps also finds the team’s jokes about her sweatpants superstition humorous although she will not allow them to replace them with a new pair.
