About the Math Department

The Department of Mathematics is comprised of nineteen faculty and over a hundred undergraduates studying in Lafayette's three major programs in mathematics. The unusually large size of this department for a small liberal arts college like Lafayette allows for considerable diversity in the department's course offerings as well as the scholarly interests of the faculty (listed here). This permits students not only of mathematics but also of engineering and the sciences to pursue their special mathematical interests in depth. Here is a list of research papers with undergraduate coauthors that have been produced by the department, and here is a list of recent independent study and honors projects.

The college's Public Information office has prepared many press releases describing activities in the math department, and also maintains a web page describing the department and its programs; their web page is almost always slightly out of date.

The department has been home to a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) for several years. For more information about the Lafayette REU in mathematics see the REU's home page or contact Gary Gordon or John Meier.
