Mathematical Problem Competitions

Gary Gordon and I organize and run various problem competitions for the Department. Each semester we run the Barge Team Problem Competition, which is a semester long competition open to all full time Lafayette students. Each fall we help run the LVAIC Mathematics Competition, which is a one day exam open to all full time students from any of the LVAIC institutions (Allentown, Cedar Crest, Lafayette, Lehigh, Moravian, Muhlenburg). We also administer the Putnam Exam, a national competitive mathematics exam open to all full time undergraduates, on the first Saturday in December. For further information about any (or all) of these competitions, please contact either Gary Gordon or me, or consult the Problem Competitions page on the Department web site.

Sample Problem:  Two jugs contain a liter of wine and a liter of water respectively. Ten milliliters of wine from the wine jug are poured into the water jug which is then mixed well. Now twenty milliliters of fluid from the water jug are poured back into the wine jug, which is also mixed well. Finally ten milliliters from the wine jug are poured into the water jug. Is there more wine in the water jug than there is water in the wine jug?
