For the past ten years, Lafayette College
Wrestling, through the direction of advisor John Piper, has
been at the forefront in the development of the National
Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA). The wrestling program
has produced 13 All-Americans out of 33 qualifiers in the
ten-year history of the NCWA. This performance places
Lafayette College Wrestling with the highest All-American to
qualifier percentage of NCWA charter member schools.
Lafayette College Wrestling began in 1924-25 and was sponsored
by the college in the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA). From the late 1960s through 1988 wrestling competed in
the NCAA Division I. From 1988 until today, wrestling has been
sanctioned by Lafayette Student Government and monitored by
the Office of Student Activities. Lafayette was a charter
member in the establishment of the NCWA in 1998 and hosted the
first-ever NCWA Northeast Conference Championships and
participated in the first NCWA National Championships placing
7th overall with three All-Americans.
In 1999, Lafayette produced its highest number of
All-Americans in one season with four. The year 2000 saw
Lafayette place 10th with three All-American wrestlers. In
2001, Nick Jacobi ‘02 became the first NCWA Champion in
Lafayette history at 285 lbs. The team placed 13th with one
additional All-American wrestler.
