recycling in residence halls

what to recycle

what gets recycled?

  • Cans

    Aluminum beverage cans, tin cans
  • Glass

Clear and colored bottles and jars, no broken glass
  • Plastics - #1 and #2 only

Soda bottles, milk jugs, laundry detergent bottles, etc.
  • Paper

White office paper only, no glossy paper
  • Newspaper

Cans, glass, and plastics are recycled together on every floor.

Paper and newspaper are recycled separately on the first floor of your building, near the exits.

Please rinse out containers if they have anything gooey inside.

trash can

when things go wrong

Contrary to what many people believe, things put in recycle bins actually do get recycled. The exception to this is when people put trash in recycle bins, which forces the custodians to treat the entire bin as trash. So...
  • Don't put trash in recycle bins. (Duh.)
  • If you see a student or faculty member putting trash in a recycling bin, say something to him or her about it.
  • If you see a custodian throwing away the contents of a recycle bin, ask him or her about it. If you believe the custodian is not following recycling policies, please let the recycling committee know. We don't want to get anyone in trouble, but we want to make sure custodians are doing their job to recycle right.

As a rule, if you don't put trash in the recycle bin, the custodians won't put the recycle bin in the trash.

what to look for

recycle bin
  • There should be a blue recycle bin next to every large trash can.
  • All recycle bins should be using clear plastic bags to differentiate them from trash cans.
  • All residence halls should have paper and newspaper recycling bins on the first floor near the exit doors.
If your residence hall does not meet these standards, please let the recycling committee know about it. We are working hard to achieve consistency in recycling at Lafayette.

If you have questions about recycling or suggestions about how we can improve the program, please email them to the recycling committee. We want to have a recycling program that works for everyone!

Please recycle - you make the difference!
