Green Committee Meeting Minutes December 17, 2004 Secretary: Josh Porter Present at meeting: Arthur Kney Andy Baker Katalin Fabian Javad Tavakoli Andrew Kortyna Josh Porter An agreement was made to post minutes for these meetings publicly. Josh (as LEAP webmaster and student liaison to Green Committee) will handle this. Next time we meet we will post notification on the college calendar. Whoever convenes the meeting (Josh for the next meeting) will do this. A suggestion was made by Professor Tavakoli that the meeting organizer should set up objectives and things to think about at the next meeting. The topic of this meeting is Lights! Andy talked with Hugh Harris, Director of Public Safety, and found out that Public Safety is responsible for closing up four buildings: AEC, Farinon Center, Hogg Hall, and Pardee Hall on the weekends. In other academic buildings, the custodians are responsible for closing up. In these four buildings, Public Safety shuts off the lights unless someone is in there, a fact confirmed by several people's experiences in AEC. Professor Kortyna talked to the custodians in Hugel and found out that they don't have instructions about turning off lights; they just do "whatever they feel is right." In this particular case the custodians turn off lights when nobody is there. Josh reported on the status of the lights in South College: Minimal lighting is always on and cannot be turned off; other lights are sometimes turned off but nobody really knows who is doing it. Andy wants to talk to Bruce Zansitis, Custodial Supervisor (x5386) about these issues. A decision was made to draft a letter to President Rothkopf, cc Fred Quivey, based on the previous letter the Green Committee wrote to the Lafayette. Andy will write the letter, and Josh will locate the previous letter online. Said letter will refer to the Green Committee's meeting with Quivey earlier this fall as well as the recycling/conservation policy from June 2003 (not sure of date?). Professor Fabian reported the good news that Skillman Library has newspaper recycling. Status of ink cartridge recycling: LEAP will be coordinating the program, and will step up its effors next semester. Professor Kortyna reported on the status of recycling in Hugel. The custodian empties cans and bottles once a week (Tuesday?) and a special truck picks it up. Contamination has been an issue. The custodian also picks up white paper from offices and takes it to the Hugel/Kunkel white paper recycle bin every Thursday. It was observed that AEC has a paper recycling container between the chemical engineering lab and the concrete lab, in the Plant Operations parking lot. This is not such a great location because nobody knows where it is. Discussion of how to stop recycling contamination? - Lids do help with this; they are listed as part of the June 2003 (?) recycling/conservation policy. This committee will next meet Friday, January 28, 2005, at noon in Gilbert's. Josh will convene the meeting. Topics that will be discussed include: - planning for the spring semester - reviewing Andy's letter to Rothkopf - find out what happens with Plant Operations. Andy is going to see whether they can make it part of the custodial duties to turn off lights. - discuss how to get Plant Operations to implement lids for recycle bins
