Green Committee meeting minutes December 2, 2004 In attendance: Javad Tavakoli Katalin Fabian Andy Kortyna Art Kney Chris Reyns Chikuma Andy Baker Josh Porter Carrie Fritschie Will Hockett Last Meeting: before classes started in August, agreed at that time to try working just with Quivey, and not meeting until he organized the official committee. Clearly, since we are meeting now, we've agreed that this hasn't been effective. Summary of LEAP activities for the past semester: Ink Cartridge Recycling: LEAP found a company that will pay us for used ink cartridges. We're finishing up a small-scale test in AEC with the computer labs now. Everything seems to be going well (haven't gotten the check yet, but we forsee no difficulties). We've gotten approval from Quivey to take full control of this (this way, we get the funds instead of the college). Beginning next semester we will spread it to the whole campus. Implementation is still in the planning phase (ideas welcome!) 100% recycled paper campaign: Right now we are testing using 100% recycled paper in the Physics department. There used to be issues with the paper causing printer jams (15 years ago), but rumor has it that the new blends are much better. If it looks to be of passable quality, we will be petitioning department secretaries to begin using this. Student Activity fee increase (to be used for green energy purchase). (update: temporarily off, because student government won't meet in time for when this needs to be decided). Energy Reduction Challenge: (long-term plan) Once we've raised the energy issue a little higher in the student consciousness, we'll be running, with the administration, an energy reduction challenge for the student body. How it will work is still being discussed, but the general idea is that whichever dorm reduces energy consumption by the most would receive some sort of prize. General Discussion: -Can we get public safety to turn lights off? Maybe get janitors to do this? Josh Porter is going to talk to public safety about whether they do or could do this. Everyone should ask their janitor about whether they turn the lights off. -"Adopt a Building" program? Could LEAP organize it so that students are in charge of keeping an eye on recycling/energy usage issues in their building? -Lids: Lids on recycling bins have been proven to be effective and were in the recycling master plan that was agreed upon a year and a half ago. (can someone send a copy of this out?) We need lids, and how can we get them? -How should the green committee react to the new president. What can we do to get him on our side from the beginning? Does anyone know who this will be? -What happened with Quivey? No faculty contact during the semester. LEAP has been talking with him, and Andy, Will and Josh were officially "interviewed." General consensus is, we've been marginalized, and they're trying to hog-tie us. Should we confront Quivey about the lack of meeting, etc? By phone, in person, by email? We will email him, asking him when he will schedule a meeting of the committee, and who is on it. If we don't hear anything, we need to go and ask him in person. Consensus seems to be that students have less to potentially lose in confronting him than faculty. -Organization of the meeting: Suggested that we pick 1 issue per meeting and really work on that, instead of jumping about all over and getting nothing actually done. unclear whether or not this was agreed upon. EMAIL FORUM Monthly meetings, on the 2nd Tuesday at lunch. (Andy has a conflict with this Tuesdays & Thursdays - can other times be discussed? Would the 2nd Wednesday at lunch work?) Project for next meeting: Lights. We all know the lighting situation is bad, but what can easily be done to make it better. Is it possible to turn the lights out in Hugel? Why don't they? Josh is going to talk to public safety, asking if they could make the folks doing the rounds in buildings turn the lights off. Everyone should ask their janitor whether or not they turn out the lights.
