Web server accounts are available free of charge to any Lafayette College full-time student or employee.

Accounts must be used in accordance with the college's Acceptable Use Policy, and ITS reserves the right to limit the use of technologies that might compromise the security and integrity of the college's IT resources. In particular, any mechanism that sends email must be registered with and approved by ITS.

College faculty and staff may secure an account by sending e-mail to ITS at ITS@lafayette.edu.

Individual students or officers of student organizations can request accounts by completing the appropriate account application form. Forms must be filled out, signed, and sent via campus mail to: Web Accounts, Information Technology Services, Room 120, Skillman Library.

Determining the purpose of your site

How you design and develop your site and how it will be linked to from the College Web site will depend upon its purpose.

  • Student organization sites: a student organization Web site is expected to represent the organization as a whole and be developed with the consensus of other members. It might include information on the purpose, membership, activities, and plans of the organization as well as photos of members and projects. Although pages on the site may be developed by any member or group of members of the organization, the organization president will be responsible for the content.
  • Personal pages: a Web site that represents a student's or employee's personal and academic interests is the creative expression of the author. You are expected to follow the guidelines on the account application form.

Developing your site

While ITS staff cannot author or maintain your personal, departmental, or organizational Web pages, we do provide resources that may be of assistance in your development process.

  • Training: Workshops on Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop, and other creation tools are offered throughout the year. One-on-one training is also available by contacting a member of the Instructional Technology staff.
  • Software: While ITS does not provide individual licenses for Web development software, most common development tools are installed on computers in the Itech Study and media lab in Skillman Library. View the current list of software installed on public lab computers to locate programs you may want to use.

Transferring and testing your pages

For transferring your home page and other files to Lafayette's Web server, use an FTP client. WS_FTP LE (Windows) and Fetch (Mac) are both available for download in the software section of this site.

Connection information:

  • The FTP host is ww2.lafayette.edu
  • The initial Host/Remote folder/directory can be either public_html or public_html/[subdirectory]
  • The username and password are provided when your account is created.
  • Use SFTP (secure file transfer protocol) on Port 22.

Those needing to access their Web directories from off-campus via SFTP will need to install and run the Lafayette VPN client prior to connecting.

All publicly accessible files must be located in the public_html folder or subfolders within public_html. It is recommended that you use the filename index.html for your first or main page. This will make your site accessible at http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~username/ (i.e., if the main page is named index.html, you won't have to use a file name after ~username/ to get there).

Applying for linkage from the college Web site

When you have completed, tested, and uploaded your pages, click "Request a link..." on the student home page list or the faculty home page list. Fill in the form that appears and submit it. Linkage to your page from the Lafayette site is a privilege that can be withdrawn at any time if you violate the college's standards of legality, good taste, or fair use.

Be a responsible network author

The contents of your Web site help represent Lafayette to the world by way of the Internet. This is a privilege and can be withdrawn at any time for violations of law or Lafayette policy.

Follow the guidelines on the application form, fair use of copyrighted material, and the Principles of Intellectual Honesty listed in the Student Handbook. Accounts must be used in accordance with the college's Acceptable Use Policy.

Please review and maintain your files and remove any materials from the server as soon as they become out-of-date.
