International Economics and Commerece and Studio Art

Hometown: Queens, NY
Country of Origin: Venezuela

Being born in Venezuela and having a Colombian mother helped me to appreciate two different cultures and understand that there are differences within Latin American countries. Arriving on the Lafayette campus three years ago made me realize that there are not many people who understand that “Hispanic” does not mean that they share the same beliefs, eat arroz con pollo, and all dance salsa. I quickly saw that HSL was one of the organizations on campus that tried to break that barrier. It has not only helped me to educate others but also to educate myself about other Latin American countries.

Vice President ~ Rosemary Frias '08

Economics and Business with a Finance Concentration

Hometown: New York, NY

I joined HSL so that I could have the opportunity to spread awareness about Latin American culture while at Lafayette College. HSL has been a way for me to stay in touch with my Latin roots while learning about other Latin American cultures as well. I am proud to be a Latina and I wanted make sure that I adequately represent my culture.

Economics

Hometown: Karachi, Pakistan

I believe that HSL is one of the very few organizations at Lafayette that has managed to retain its culture and roots as well as make other people aware about its opinions and issues. Ever since I came to Lafayette, my closest friends have been people who identify with Latin culture, and that has inspired me to learn more about this group. I feel like by being a part of HSL, I can not only broaden my horizons and meet different people, but also bring my own perspective into the organization in order to make it more diverse.

Latin American Studies and Policy Studies

Hometown: Quito, Ecuador

Being from Ecuador and coming to study to a different country made me realize how much I love my culture.  By participating In HSL events I was able to feel a sense of home but also learn more about other aspects of the culture I was not aware of.  This year, I have been lucky to be part of the board allowing me to spread the culture I love across the Lafayette Community.

Psychology

Hometown: Lima, Peru

I joined HSL because when I came to Lafayette it was difficult to find people that would relate to my culture and the things that I was used to. When I'm in a HSL meeting, party or any kind of activity, especially when it involves food, it feels a little like home. HSL gave the opportunity to not only learn about other Hispanic countries but to promote these countries as they were my own.

Economics and Business

Hometown: Guatemala City, Guatemala

Coming from Guatemala to Lafayette College has reinforced the love I have for my country. I believe HSL gives us the opportunity to share all that we love with others and at the same time learn about other cultures, other traditions, different types of food and interact with very interesting people. I joined HSL because I want to be part of the cultural awareness that HSL sponsors.
