This is a graph of cicada-killer males (plotted by tag number on the Y-axis) which were tagged and released on the Van Wickle Hall lek at Lafayette College in 1990. Each day I watched the lek at intervals all day and caught and tagged as many males as I could and recorded the numbers of tagged males when I saw them. Thus, all males seen at least once on each day are plotted above that day number on the graph; many males were seen several times each day because they were occupying territories on the lek. No males were present on the lek after day 227, August 15.

On day 204 (July 23), I caught and kept all of the males I could and used the product of total males caught and the total number of males tagged and released on the lek up to that day (32 x 29), divided by the number of unmarked males in the sample (9) to compute the male population size (103 males). As is the case in all mark-recapture measurements, the estimate assumes that no males died or left the area before day 204; marking began on day 198.
