Getting Started with Linux

12 -1 PM, Monday, October 15th, Skillman 004

Overview

The goal of my talk is to bring together people who are interested in Linux and provide information to help them start using it. I'm going to give an overview of the system's history in order to define terms that a new user will hear but may find confusing and explain the motivation behind certain conventions within the Linux community. The overview will cover:

  • What is Linux?
  • GNU/Linux History
  • Free and Open Source Software
  • Linux Distributions

I'll also be giving out CD's of the Ubuntu Distribution and explaining how to use them to safely explore Linux (without making changes to your computer) until you are comfortable enough to install it.
