This exhibit space for student work illustrates the great diversity of Film & Media projects engaged in by Lafayette students. Included are contextual descriptions, assignment explanations, and attributions for the projects.

Video on the main page of this website will rotate as projects become available. The current main-page video is a loop of five projects from ENG 240 students from Fall 2007. Beginning film students learned to use the digital editing application Final Cut Pro to construct short commercials addressing the potential establishment of a Film & Media Studies program at the college. The ENG 240 student filmmakers are: Karen Ruggles, Emily Weisenreder, Dan Olivi, Kate Liptak, and Matt Bilheimer.

Spring 2008 ENG 340: Documentary Film students worked in teams to complete 6 short (10-15 minute) documentary films. The assignment was to produce an original film based largely on issues present beyond the Lafayette campus community. Most of the students had limited experience as filmmakers before the class, and some had no experience. The films premiered Monday, May 12, 2008, in the Williams Center for the Arts.

ENG 340 integrates rigorous theoretical film study with hands on filmmaking practice. As such, these students complete what is in essence two courses in one semester. Students read and write a great deal, screen and discuss all or parts of dozens of documentary films, and learn how to use video cameras, sound equipment, and digital editing software. They collaborate both within and across teams, putting into practice what they have learned by writing about and screening documentary film.  This collaboration and integration enriches their understanding of film from both creative and critical perspectives.
