2007 Trip to Honduras: Abstract This trip put the finishing touches on the Lagunitas water project. Six students from Lafayette EWB traveled to Lagunitas along with six students from the Alternative School Break group. Construction work included a greywater drainage system for every house; cement boxes to cover valves throughout the system; the replacement of several check valves; and the installation of GI pipe in exposed locations. EWB, ASB, and members of the community worked side-by-side on these projects, with the bulk of the digging for the greywater drains done by the ASB team. Workshops were offered on watershed conservation and accounting; the community was also surveyed to gain a better understanding of how the water system is being used and how it affects daily life in the village. Three EWB students traveled from Lagunitas to La Fortuna for several days, to put in place the necessary environmental protection for the community's spring source, including a diversion ditch, a barbed-wire fence, and a designated watershed green zone. The students also worked to educate the community on good environmental practices; and to prepare for the construction of the water distribution system to begin in the summer of 2007.
