January 2006 Trip to Honduras: Abstract
Over the 2006 winter interim, two students went to Lagunitas to finalize the last details of the projec and nine other students traveled to La Fortuna to begin EWB-LC's second project. This site visit incorporated technical (surveying, water quality assessment, ect.) and cultural (community health, community needs) surveys. Using the collected data from the site assessment, the students entered into an intense engineering policy course that focused on sustainable water resource and sanitation solutions for the village. Ultimately, the class worked to procure a $75,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency so that their designs could be implemented.

While working towards sustainable solutions and the grant, EWB-LC developed an innovative and methodical evaluation approach: Community Oriented Design and Evaluation Process For Sustainable Infrastructure (CODE-PSI). CODE-PSI is based on sustainability lessons learned from similar service learning EWB-LC projects; thus, it is comprehensive of all three aspects of sustainability: people, planet and prosperity. Nevertheless, EWB-LC won the EPA P3 (people, prosperity, and planet) grant, enabling them to proceed with the design and implementation process.
