Central Gravity-Fed Design

Abstract
To address the issues in La Fortuna, a centralized gravity-fed water treatment and distribution system is proposed.  EWB-LC has designed a simple system that will provide easy access to treated water.  The time savings and health improvements will decrease school absenteeism and will increase worker productivity and agricultural output.  The design’s innovation stems from the use of two pipelines and a slow sand filter for water treatment.  This design allows the first pipeline to treat only as much water as necessary.  Treating all of the water would be an overdesign that is not sustainable.  The second pipeline provides enhanced reliability, and will allow uninterrupted water delivery to the community.
