Some students interested in applying mathematics and science to solve problems are not sure which engineering discipline would be right for them. Lafayette's first year is common for all disciplines of engineering.

First semester:

  • ES 101: Introduction to Engineering
  • Math 161: Calculus I
  • FYS: First Year Seminar
  • Chem 121: General Chemistry I
Second semester:
  • ENGL. 110: College Writing OR Humanities/Social Science Elective OR CS 102: Principles of Computer Science I
  • Math 162: Calculus II
  • Chem 122: General Chemistry II OR ES 231: Nature of Materials
  • Physics 131: Newtonian Dynamics
AP credits (typically requiring a score of 4 or 5 on the AP exam) are accepted for some of these courses and can be used to either get ahead in a particular discipline (e.g., take the next course in the math sequence) or to explore an area of student interest (e.g., take a language course).
