Hazing

Hazing is defined as any activity which is intended to be physically or mentally demeaning; or which places anyone in risk of personal injury, whether or not intended. A rule of thumb definition describes it as any act that you would be embarrassed or hesitant to tell your parents, friends, or peers about. If you have to wonder whether an act or statement is hazing, chances are it is. As described in the Cornerstone and other literature, Delta Upsilon Fraternity forbids hazing in any form within its chapters.

The programs and activities that you and your class will be participating in are not designed to demean or embarrass you in any way. If you are concerned that an event you are taking part in may be a form of hazing, you must report your feelings to one of the brothers. The assimilation process will stress education and growth over abuse and ridicule. It is designed to familiarize you with Delta Upsilon and prepare you for active and productive participation. What possible service could be done by abusing you for one semester?

Delta Upsilon does not find it necessary to depend on secret handshakes, mottoes, or seals to bind us together as a group and perpetuate the brotherhood. We are a true brotherhood, built on the foundations of trust, loyalty, responsibility, and respect. No injustice felt by a member of our brotherhood will be tolerated.

Alcohol

With the stereotypes of Greek groups in their minds, many see "fraternity" being synonymous with "alcoholics". Delta Upsilon, however, does not abide by any stereotype. We do not force or coerce anyone associated with us to consume or abuse alcohol, whether they are associates, brothers, or our guests. The Fraternity promotes safe and controlled alcohol use.

In any group, including fraternities, there are those that choose not to use alcohol or other intoxicants. The brothers of Delta Upsilon respect that individual's decision and will treat the individual no differently than if the choice were otherwise.

Remember: 1) you do not have to drink if you choose not to; 2) you are responsible for your actions--drunkenness is not an excuse; 3)you are responsible for the conduct of those around you (guests as well as brothers) during a function in which alcohol is involved; 4) and above all, keep in mind that you represent the brotherhood. Even when alcohol is involved, you must maintain the conduct characteristic of Delta Upsilon.

Drug Abuse

Delta Upsilon looks down upon and strongly opposes the abuse of drugs in any form. Drug abuse is an activity that is detrimental to the individual and the Fraternity as a whole. It will not be tolerated on Fraternity premises or at our functions.

Discrimination

One of the principles that Delta Upsilon was founded upon is the Diffusion of Liberal Culture. We do not discriminate in any way, shape, or form for any reason whatsoever. The Fraternity looks down upon this practice, and we will not tolerate it from any individual we come in contact with in any context.
