Scholarships and Fellowships
The mission of the Fellowships Advising Program is to work with students and alumni in applying for nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships. The Dean of the College Office administers several prestigious scholarship and fellowship programs which require Lafayette endorsement prior to submission. Despite the highly competitive nature of these programs, Lafayette applicants have competed successfully over the years.
We can help you unlock your potential, learn about yourself, and become more competitive for scholarships and fellowships. Interested individuals, including first year students and recent graduates, are encouraged to make an appointment with Dean Goldberg (goldbeja@lafayette.edu) to discuss these opportunities.
The fellowship advisor engages students and alumni in thinking about their goals, preparing their applications for submission to the national foundations, and providing mock interview experience. The application process takes a significant amount of time; therefore, it is important to start early and be fully engaged in working with the fellowship advisor and your faculty mentors.
Description
Applying for a scholarship or fellowship is an intense learning experience. You will change and develop, you will think about yourself and your future, in ways few undergraduates ever will. You will be a winner simply by participating.
The liberal arts education provided by Lafayette opens doors to many prestigious scholarship and fellowship opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate study and research, as well as attendance at top tier graduate and professional schools. However, to be competitive for such programs and institutions requires planning and preparation. As such, it is never too early to start. If you have the drive, passion, and commitment, Dean Goldberg, as the Fellowships advisor, will provide the guidance and support necessary for you to develop your portfolio and competitive edge.
By applying for a scholarship or fellowship, you will be required to articulate your ideas, values, and plans. Through the process, you will emerge with a clearer understanding of who you are, what you value, and where you are headed.
While a strong GPA is generally a prerequisite to receive a prestigious scholarship or fellowship, good grades are not sufficient for success. What it takes is dedication and commitment to your personal, intellectual and professional growth, values, and aspirations as well as a commitment to making this world a better place through sustained public and/or community service. Thus, to be competitive, your academic accomplishments should be complemented with a record of significant achievement across the board. Finally, successful candidates are well-versed in current affairs and in their own areas of study and interest.
Don’t wait for others to recognize your talents and potential.
Take the initiative: Explore your world; Delve into your interests; Speak with professors about topics that interest you; Attend public lectures, and the performances and exhibitions at the Williams Center for the Arts and Williams Visual Arts Building;
Get involved and push yourself: Use your skills, interests, and concerns to make a difference.
Take charge of your personal and intellectual development. In the end, all will benefit from your efforts.
