At Lafayette College, undergraduate students are given many opportunities to do cutting edge research working one-on-one with faculty.  Students have the option of taking for credit courses as either an honors thesis research or an independent study project or they can apply for an EXCEL Scholarship.  EXCEL scholars are paid to conduct research during the semester, over the interim, or during the summer.

Students and Faculty Combine Expertise in Multidisciplinary Research on Sustainable Perchlorate Removal A multidisciplinary sustainability research project allowing students from majors in the liberal arts and engineering to combine their expertise to explore cost-effective methods for removing the harmful contaminant perchlorate from groundwater.

Civil engineering major Lindsey Brough ’08 (Durham, Maine) is the lead researcher for the new “Student-Mentor Research Award Program,” sponsored by the Pennsylvania Water Environment Association (PWEA). Its purpose is to bring municipal officials, professional engineers, wastewater operators, and academics together to work on environmental research. Her adviser is Arthur Kney, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering.
