Many students who are interested in applying math and science to solve problems are not sure which discipline of engineering would be right for them. Lafayette’s first year is common for all disciplines of engineering. During the first semester students take:

  • ES 101: Introduction to Engineering
  • Math 161: Calculus I
  • FYS: First Year Seminar
  • Chem 121: General Chemistry I
During the second semester students take
  • Engl. 110: College Writing
  • Math 162: Calculus II
  • Chem 122: General Chemistry II or ES 231: Nature of Engineering Materials
  • Physics 131: Physics I: Mechanics
AP credits (typically requiring a score of 4 or 5 on the AP exam) are accepted for some of these courses and can be used to either get ahead in a particular discipline (e.g., take the next course in the math sequence) or to explore an area of student interest (e.g., take a language course)
