Services for Students
Gateway
Program
A career or graduate study may seem a long way off. But determining
and achieving your goals require that you begin thinking and planning
almost from the beginning. The Gateway Program is an exploration of
your potential, goals, and career opportunities. Gateway guides you
towards the fields that fit your interests, ambitions, and talents.
Find out more in the Gateway Brochure.
To register for the program, fill out the Student
Agreement and return to Career Services.
Counseling
Schedule an individual appointment with a Gateway Counselor to identify
your skills, values, interests, and how to apply them to a rewarding
career. Your counselor's guidance will complement what you discuss with
your academic adviser so that you can parallel your curriculum and career
goals. Career assessments are also available.
Assessment
Selecting a career is an exciting yet difficult decision. Interest inventories
can be a great starting point as you begin to consider options that
best match your unique skills, interests, and values. Counselors are
available for consultation following self-assessment testing. The Strong
Interest Inventory, Self Directed Search, and Myers Briggs Type Indicator
are offered.
Workshops
and Programs
A wide variety of workshops and programs are offered each year on such
diverse topics as resume preparation, job search skills, interviewing
tips, and year of service programs. Special events such as Alumni Dinner
Panels, Leopard Career Connection Day, regional networking nights, and Finance Night in New York
are also part of the yearly calendar. Please browse our fall 2007 Calendar
of Events for a taste of what we offer.
Externships
Externships are two to five day job shadowing opportunities offered during January
interim session. By shadowing a career volunteer in the workplace, you
gain insight into a specific career or industry
in which you are interested. Your host may invite you to attend meetings,
review projects, go on location with a client, or help complete a special
project. Available externships are printed
in a booklet and sent to your campus box in October. Call Career Services
at x5115 for information on how to apply.
Internships
Internships are an excellent way to gain valuable experience, build skills, and
gather first-hand knowledge about a career area. These experiences
can be paid, volunteer, or for academic credit. Your Gateway Counselor
will show you how to search Job Vault for
summer internships, alumni-sponsored internships, as well as how to
apply to regional and national internship programs. Search our collection
of online internship resources in our Career
Search Tools section.
A limited number of alumni endowed stipends are available to assist students engaging in summer internships. These vary in monetary amounts and some have restrictions on the career area of the internship. Applications are available in early March.
Career Services supports students interning at local Lehigh Valley employers by providing a limited number of on-campus spots free of charge to students. Contact Rachel Moeller at moellerr@lafayette.edu for more information.
Alumni-Sponsored
Internships
Lafayette alumni and parents provide summer opportunities to current
students. The employers make the final hiring decisions. Your Gateway
Counselor can assist you in identifying and preparing to apply for Alumni
Sponsored Internship opportunities. Search Job
Vault by "alumni-sponsored internships" to review employment
and internship opportunities for summer. Begin your summer job search
early and start checking Job Vault as early as October/November.
Full-time Positions
Search the Job Vault for full-time positions
and submit your resume directly to the employer. Many employers visit
campus each semester for the annual Career Fair (held in September)
and for on-campus interviewing conducted October through April. Meet
with your Gateway Counselor to help identify other employers to target
as well as to create a personalized job search plan.
Graduate School
Advising
Career Services works with students who already know the programs
in which they are interested as well as those who are curious about
what opportunities exist. Individual graduate school counseling as well
as workshops and programs about the application process are offered.
An extensive selection of graduate school materials is available in
the Career Services office and in Skillman Library. Lafayette faculty
are also valuable sources of information. In addition, this site offers
online graduate school
information.
Alumni
Networking Contacts
Career Services provides access to AlumNet,
a network of alumni with whom you can talk about career fields that
interest you. Meet with your Gateway Counselor to obtain and discuss
how to use these networking lists.
Résumé
and Cover Letter Critiques
Gateway Counselors
are available to critique resumes and cover letters by appointment.
You can also drop off your document at Career Services and a Counselor
will have the critique prepared for you to pick up in 2-3 days. If you need assistance
in preparing a resume or cover letter, schedule an appointment, or attend
one or our resume and cover letter workshops offered each semester.
Resume Riots (quick critiquing sessions) are also scheduled throughout
the semester.
Mock Interviews
The best way to prepare
for an interview is to actually do one. Schedule a videotaped mock interview
with your Gateway Counselor for personalized feedback on your interviewing
skills. Employers strongly recommend students engage in mock interviews
prior to the formal job or internship search. Once a semester we offer mock interviews with employers during Recruiters in Residence Week.
