Opportunities for Involvement
Your participation
as a parent volunteer significantly impacts the Lafayette Experience
and the individual students you work with. Career Services is committed
to the continued connection between students and volunteers. Consider
these opportunities for ways to assist students with career choices,
or work with Career Services to develop your own.
Host an Externship
An Externship is
a two to five day job shadowing experience held at your workplace during
the January interim break. Immerse the student in your daily activities
to help him or her gain a better understanding of your field. Students are
not paid and are responsible for their own transportation and housing
(although some hosts do provide housing as an option).
Externships
can be structured in many ways and the student need not spend the entire
time by your side. Students enjoy varied activities such as attending
meetings, touring the workplace, visiting with clients, and meeting
with other members of your organization. The goal is to provide an experience
that offers a realistic understanding of a career field. The application
deadline is September 30.
Register now by filling out the application and returning it by mail
or as an attachment by email to Rachel Moeller at moellerr@lafayette.edu.

Hire Lafayette
Interns
Provide a one to three month work experience at your workplace. The
duration depends upon your needs, but the majority of internships occur
during the summer. The position can be part-time or full-time, paid
or unpaid, but it is expected that the student have a structured and
supervised work or service experience. Paid internships are obviously
more desirable to students.
An internship provides
a balance between the learning objectives of the student and the specific
work an organization needs completed. Someone (you or your designee),
will need to be available to supervise the intern and provide feedback.
Your internship
is posted to the Career Services online Job Vault and students apply
directly to you or your designee. Register now by filling out the application
and returning it by mail or as an attachment by email to Rachel Moeller
at moellerr@lafayette.edu.
Hire Graduating
Seniors
Consider recruiting Lafayette students for entry-level positions in
your organization. Career Services has a variety of ways in which we
can assist you with your hiring needs. On campus recruiting, our annual
career fair, job posting, information sessions and resume collections
are just a few of the ways we can connect you with Lafayette candidates.
Contact Nanette Cooley at cooleyn@lafayette.edu for more information.
Provide an Internship
or Full Time Job Referral
Even if you cannot personally hire an intern or graduate, you can still
be a resource for students interested in working at your organization.
Provide Career Services with information about available opportunities
along with how students can apply. Consider allowing students to contact
you directly with questions about the realities of working at your organization.
For questions regarding volunteering, contact Rachel Moeller, moellerr@lafayette.edu
or call (610) 330-5115.
Register for
the AlumNet Database
Connect with Lafayette students to share your expertise and passion
for your work. Sign up to be a part of our AlumNet database. Career
Services staff work with students to provide lists of parents and alumni
from this database for networking purposes. Students must meet with
their Gateway Counselor before your contact information will
be shared with them. At that time, students are advised that the information
provided from AlumNet is to be used only for the purpose of conducting
informational interviews or for field and career guidance. Register now by filling out an AlumNet Volunteer
Form and returning it by mail or as an attachment by email to Rachel
Moeller at moellerr@lafayette.edu.
