Madison
Read and approved minutes from previous meeting w/ a few corrections
Reviewed sessions in Madison & Miami
Sacremento sessions & crucial topics
- Two industrial forums for Sacramento (in conjunction w/ committee
on prof concerns):
- Chuck DeLeone will organize a session on employment
opportunities for BS students (statistics, kinds of jobs, etc.) Joe Finn
at Sonoma State and the Fresno State efforts & web site would be good
resources.
- Mark McKinnon will organize a cracker barrel w/ industrial
physicists & HR people about helping students find and prepare for
industrial employment.
- Gary White will organize a session on involving undergraduates in
research
- Karen Cummings will organize a session reporting on the results
of the calculus-based physics conference in September.
- We discussed looking at content of the introductory course for
non-majors. Ongoing efforts of Joe Reddish & Bob Fuller were
mentioned.
- Steve Turley will organize a session on First Year issues for physics
students. This could naturally include ideas for helping women &
minorities as well.
- Ray Bernstein will be a liaison between our committee and the APS
division of beams for the Sacramento meeting.
- We discussed piggy backing on the Gordon Conference on Nonlinear
Dynamics and having an AAPT session on this topic. Juan Burciaga will
organize it.
Topics postponed for later comsideration
- session on match between GRE, UG curriculum, & grad school for a future
meeting
- TA training will be addressed later. It is also a concerning of the
graduate committee.
- Effective teaching of large classes will be addressed later.
- College teacher preparation & development will be discussed later. .It
is also a concern of the graduate committee.
The Alburquerque meeting
- The National Society of Hispanic Physicists has an interest in
co-hosting the Albuquerque meeting.
- Ideas for Albuquerque theme: Physics & Society, Einstein's Physics,
Computational Physics, Worlds of Physics.
Ken Krane will organize an invited session for Miami on topics from the
SPIN-UP report
Ken Krane is chairing a task force on Resources for University/College
teachers. We discussed how we might help w/ ideas and/or reviewers. One
idea was having working groups w/ different physics specialties that might
contribute.
