Health insurance available to all students:
Lafayette College encourages all students to have Health Insurance. Varsity Athletes and International Students are required to have Lafayette College Group Health Insurance or comparable coverage with another health plan. Please check with your insurance company to make sure your student will be adequately covered while away at college. We have found that most out of area HMO insurance companies only provide limited benefits for acute emergency situations.
All students have the option of purchasing Lafayette College's Group Health Insurance. Please review the enclosed brochure outlining the Security Mutual Life Insurance Company's medical insurance program offered by Lafayette College. It is an excellent insurance plan with no co-pays in network. To enroll, simply mark item #1 under the "Insurance Information" section of the enclosed "Emergency Notification and Medical Insurance Waiver Form." Students declining to purchase this insurance are advised to obtain health insurance through their family's health plan or insurance agent. Most companies require verification of full-time student status from the Registrar's Office (610) 330-5090.
Lafayette College carries a secondary insurance policy for varsity athletes. It only covers acute injuries received while participating in a varsity sport. Either the college's group health insurance or your personal insurance will be billed first as the primary insurance. If there are expenses not covered by one of these insurances, the athletic insurance will pay the difference provided a $1000 deductible has been met.
Accident insurance for varsity athletes:
Lafayette College carries a secondary accident policy through Mutual of Omaha for all varsity intercollegiate athletes at no charge to the student-athlete. Your personal insurance will be the first company expected to pay for bills resulting from an injury. If there are expenses not covered by your insurance, the College's secondary policy will pay the outstanding balance over a $1000 deductible. This deductible is reduced dollar-for-dollar by payments made by your insurance company and the deductible is eliminated in most cases. Please refer to Bailey Heath Center's insurance page

A "Student Athlete Accident Claim Form" must be submitted to the Director of Health Services as soon as possible after an injury. To qualify for payment under the Mutual of Omaha policy, the first expense must be incurred within 90 days of the injury. In order to process payments, Mutual of Omaha Insurance requires two documents for every charge- an itemized bill from the health care provider and an "Explanation of Benefit" report from the studen-athlete's primary insurance company. The responsibility fro compliance with these deadlines and documentaion requirements rests entirely with the student-athlete.
