Miscellaneous News and Notes

After his big birthday celebration in September 2007, the Marquis de Lafayette and his lovely wife relocated to our lobby, and stayed to help us celebrate our 25th anniversary season in 2008–2009. They were gracious hosts, welcoming patrons to performances and participating in holiday festivities. They even danced with the ushers when they thought nobody was looking.

This is the Box Office Band, as drawn on the box office whiteboard. From left to right: Rob Follett '09 on trumpet, Katie Hamerslag '08 (the artist) on saxophone, Sara Walter '09 on clarinet, Tim Zirkel '08 on trombone, and astonishingly enough, the tone-deaf A.Q. Blatt conducting the group.

"The breadth and variety of the programs and performers you have presented are truly outstanding, and the Williams Center is by far the best venue for music and dance in the Lehigh Valley. Your programs have given the Lafayette and Lehigh Valley communities the opportunity to see and hear great performances in a wonderful setting." —a fan from Allentown, PA

Somebody on the Masters of Caribbean Music tour (October 2005) marked this on the dressing room door. We don't know what it means.

These clever costumes can't disguise the smiling Williams Center ushers. What's the fun of working at the area's finest arts center if you can't dress up for a performance on Halloween? (October 2004)

This comical character is Betsy. First, a large roll of brown paper was delivered to the main office. As the days went by without the paper "Betsy"being moved to storage, Carol Donnelly added a hat, a shawl, glasses, and a necklace, and named her new friend Betsy. Carol occasionally spoke to Betsy...nobody ever heard Betsy answer her, though.

Well, we'd always heard that George Clooney was a bit of a player, and now an unnamed source has provided us these candid pix of Mr. Clooney having cozy meetings with Krista Laubach '05, Sara Kreisel '07, Alyssa Wiley '05, and Suzi Ryder '05. What? These photos are from the Arts Society's February 2005 trip to Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum? Oh...never mind.

Even a great statesman needs a bit of grooming now and then.

This porcelain bust of the Marquis de Lafayette is apparently modest, as he turns his back to the photographer while being bathed.

Williams Center Gallery Director Michiko Okaya will soon have our friend Gilbert shining proudly and back in his place at Markle Hall.

It's the Williams Center for the Arts and Gardens!

We're amusing ourselves this summer by growing tomatoes and basil in the planters by the front door.
See you in August for salad....

"I was lucky enough to attend the Toots Thielemans and Classical Jazz Quartet concerts and wish to subscribe to the 2004–05 jazz series....Thanks for bringing such great jazz to the area. It's worth the 45-mile drive on [Route] 22." —a fan from Fleetwood, PA

A popular Art Gallery installation of 2003–2004 was Ludwika Ogorzolec's My Eye Level: Space Crystallization Cycle. Students found the Gallery a relaxing place to spend time.
"Thank you so much for bringing that incredibly beautiful concert to us last evening. [St. Lawrence String Quartet, April 29, 2004] It was so wonderful, and the courtesy extended to me by the ushering staff was just as good as I get at the Met in New York. Kudos to you!!...Thank you for all the joy you bring to us at the Williams Center." —a patron from Easton, PA
