This is the fifth in a series of collections of papers. The first was called Cumulative Record (Skinner, 1959; third edition, 1972). It contained papers published over a period of almost 40 years. The papers in the second, Contingencies of Reinforcement, a theoretical analysis (Skinner, 1969), were published in the 1960s. Those in the third, Reflections on Behaviorism and Society (Skinner, 1978), and fourth, Upon Further Reflection (Skinner, 1987), showed a narrowing range and a concentration on the practices and implications of a behavioral analysis. Most of the present volume is devoted to theoretical and professional issues and is written primarily for psychologists and behavior analysts.
