IEW 2007
Organized by: Martha Were & Viktorija Gecyte
Synopsis by: Martha Were
"So what is IEW? IEW stands for International Education Week. This week was established in the year 2000 through a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and US Department of Education as an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. (IEW Website)
The week of November 12th 2007 was Lafayette’s second annual commemoration of IEW. IEW 2007 was an informative and thrilling week that involved many aspects of the Lafayette community.
It was academically stimulating with presentations given by both professors and students about research1, teaching and studying abroad. Student organizations with international education causes used IEW as an opportunity to raise awareness and fundraise for their causes2. In addition, a number of Lafayette student organizations3 financially supported IEW.
Apart from being informative, IEW 2007 had entertaining activities. International book reading gave participants the opportunity to read books from around the world over coffee and cookies while listening to tranquil music from around the world. The climax of IEW 2007 was the trivia game International Jeopardy. Participants’ knowledge of international history, current affairs and trivia were tested and there were lots of great prizes for the winning teams. Prizes were made possible by the contribution of eleven local businesses4 in Easton and the International Students Organization (ISA).
Don’t know about you but, I can hardly wait for IEW 2008. If you missed IEW 2007, mark down the week of November 17thand look out for details about IEW 2008. See you there!!
