With the First-Year Seminar (FYS), entering students begin their participation
in the Lafayette College Common Course of Study. In addition to the FYS,
The Common Course of Study includes College Writing (English 110), normally
taken second semester of the first year, and VAST (Values and
Science/Technology) generally taken in the sophomore year. All three courses
are writing-intensive and stress student-centered learning in a seminar format.
Both FYS and VAST are affiliated with The College Writing
Program. The FYS, College Writing, and VAST form the core of The Common
Course of Study in a student's first two years at the college.
