Gynecologic Services

  • Meagan L. Grega, M.D., is available Monday morning (9-11:45am) and Thursday morning (9-11:45am) at the Bailey Health Center to provide gynecological services for our female students. Appointments can be made by calling extension 5001 or by stopping at the Health Center front desk.

This is a full gynecological service including routine yearly examinations with pap smear, screening and treatment of STDs, birth control counseling and prescriptions, the "morning after pill," and confidential treatment of any other related female problem.

  • For information about sexual assault, acquaintance/date rape or if you think you may have been given a date rape drug, click here.

  • Information Regarding Routine Pelvic Exams
It is important to refrain from sexual intercourse, douching, and any intravaginal medications for at least 48 hours before your exam. When you schedule your appointment, please indicate to the secretary or nurse if this is a repeat yearly exam, your first exam and/or you have a particularly urgent problem.

Meagan L. Grega, M.D will perform the physical examination and one of the health center nurses will assist her. The physical examination is free. There is a $35 lab fee for processing and reviewing the pap smear slides. This $35 fee is due at time of exam OR it can be submitted to your insurance company. (However, when submitted to your insurance, it will no longer be confidential). If your pap smear is abnormal and requires a pathologist's review, there will be an additional $25 fee. It takes approximately two weeks for us to receive the results of your pap smear. We will notify you with the results.

All sexually active women are encouraged to have a cotton swab culture of the cervix to check for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Both diseases can be completely without symptoms and untreated chlamydia is the number one cause of infertility in this country. The cost of these tests is $30 at the time of your exam.

For those who desire a confidential HIV (AIDS) test, it is available at a discounted fee of $11. Ask the physician privately in her office following the completion of your examination.

To provide more privacy, all pelvic exams are performed on the second floor of the Bailey Health Center facing McCartney Street.

Sports Medicine

Dr. Jeffrey E. Goldstein is the team physician for our 21 varsity sports. He is board certified in Emergency medicine with added training in sports medicine. He sees athletes referred to him by the athletic training staff, as well as any other Lafayette student with an athletic injury.

Varsity athletes receive their physiotherapy in our new athletic training room in the Kirby Sports Center. The college has three full-time certified athletic trainers and two athletic training interns. Matthew Bayly is head athletic trainer and is assisted by Dawn Schleiden.

Carl Weiss, M.D. is the community based orthopedic team surgeon. He attends most home and away football games and home basketball games. Dr. Weiss holds a free weekly orthopedic clinic for varsity athletes. The injured players are attended to by the Lafayette Sports Medicine staff at the clinics. This team approach allows athletes to return quickly and safely to their sport.

Allergy Injections

The Health Center staff will administer allergy injections and store vaccines at no cost. We ask that students follow the schedule laid out by their allergist. Allergy shots are given Monday through Friday from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. when the doctor is physically present in the office. All students are requested to remain in the center for 20 minutes after their injection(s).

The Health Center has all the necessary equipment and medications to handle any unexpected allergic reaction.

Immunizations

Enrollment requirements for freshman and transfer students:

  1. Tetanus-Diphtheria booster within ten years
  2. Two M.M.R. (measles, mumps, Rubella) vaccines; the first at 12 months after birth or later and the second dose at 4-6 years old or later.
    - or -
Two doses of the measles (rubella) vaccine as noted above with at least one dose or Rubella (German measles) and mumps at 12 months after birth or later.
  3. PPD for tuberculosis within 12 months of enrollment.
  4. The primary series of polio immunizations must be completed.
  5. Three doses of the Hepatitis B vaccine (with at least two of the three doses by the time of enrollment).
  6. Must have documentation of having had chicken pox (Varicella) or the dates of the two parts Varicella vaccine.
  7. Meningococcal Vaccine is mandatory for all students (see below).

Meningococcal Vaccine:
Each fall the college offers vaccination to those students who were unable to receive this vaccine before coming to campus. The Health Center also offers the flu shot (Influenza Vaccine) during October.

This program was initiated in response to an increase in the rate of occurrence of meningococcal disease among those aged 15-24 years, including a dramatic increase in the number of outbreaks on college campuses. It appears that lifestyle behaviors put college students at increased risk. New data suggests the risk is 3 1/2 times greater for dormitory residents compared with non-dormitory residents. The greatest risk is observed in freshman.

Because of this, the American College Health Association requires that all students consider receiving the meningitis polysaccharide vaccine to reduce the risk of this potentially fatal disease. The one dose vaccine is 85-90% effective for serotypes A, C, Y and W-135. Serotype B is presently not included in the vaccine so the overall efficiency of the immunization is 64%.

Travel vaccines:
Each year many students travel abroad with school sponsored trips during the interim term and spring break. Student rosters are reviewed and recommendations made for required/recommended immunizations. These are all available at the Bailey Health Center. Please plan ahead, many vaccines require a series of injections one or more months apart.

HIV Tests

Confidential and anonymous HIV testing is available at the Health Center. The Health Center offers the rapid orasure test for a $23.00 charge and a simple blood HIV test for $11.00 No notation is made in the student's medical record and everything is processed with a randomly selected number. Each year hundreds of students avail themselves of this service.

Simply come to the Health Center and mark the reason for the visit as "confidential". When the nurse or physician sees you, express your desire for an HIV test. We will also try to answer any questions you have concerning HIV and other STD's.
