Lafayette College has offered a Bachelor of Arts degree in engineering since 1970. The degree reflects Lafayette's tradition of integrating engineering and liberal arts at the undergraduate level.
Students in the A.B. Engineering program are required to take courses in economics, government, history, foreign cultures, and fine arts, as well as the math, science, and fundamental engineering courses common to all engineering majors at Lafayette. They are encouraged to take electives in a broad range of liberal arts disciplines. Many A.B. Engineering students choose to have minors or dual majors in disciplines such as business, economics, computer science, government, pre-law, and art. Students in the A.B. Engineering program also have an opportunity to take cross-disciplinary courses in engineering economics, engineering management, and engineering and public policy. The A.B. Engineering curriculum is more flexible than B.S. programs, allowing each student to develop a program of studies which combines the technical and non-technical courses necessary to meet his or her personal and career goals.
The Bachelor of Arts in Engineering degree is not intended for students who wish to pursue careers as design engineers. Instead, A.B. Engineering graduates have entered a variety of fields which increasingly require technical knowledge, including industrial management, information systems management, construction management, environmental management and policy, architecture, law, medicine, finance, public policy analysis, systems analysis, and technical sales.
